Ventura County's Drugged Driving Prevention Efforts

Ventura County’s efforts to reduce impaired driving don’t just mean targeting late night partiers, buzzed youth, or other “obvious” groups. People using standard medication might not know the dangers of what they take — and when they drive. They can be at danger for being stopped, and getting a DUI.

It’s not about arresting more people. It’s about getting them to think about their actions. Those labels say ‘May cause drowsiness’ or ‘Do not operate heavy machinery.’ Understand your car is heavy machinery.

People often don’t understand that impairment levels can grow dangerously when different medications are combined. One of the most commonly prescribed drugs — the thyroid medication, Synthroid — can cause reactions when used in combination with hundreds of other drugs

The problem is real, and growing. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office filed criminal charges in 91 DUI drug cases over the first eight-plus months of 2015, nearly the same total as in all of 2014. Another 27 DUI cases involved drugs and alcohol.
