Group hopes gifts are as sobering as DUI statistics

In an effort to reduce drunken driving and substance-related traffic accidents during the holidays, local officials hope to make people think before they pick up the car keys.

The effort, funded by a federal grant as well as resources provided by several Ventura bars and restaurants, will use rewards and education to try to achieve its goals.

“Drunk driving and driving under the influence are a national problem,” said Dan Hicks, manager of alcohol and drug programs and prevention services for Ventura County. “But it’s at the local level where we’ll change this.”
