This student, a Camarillo High School senior, wrote this essay as part of a social change and advocacy event held by Straight Up in January 2015.

Whether it’s talking about everyday topics or difficult topics, it’s important that teenagers and their parents have good communication skills. Without these skills, it can become hard to build trust and respect within the family.

Good communication isn’t something that’s important just during adolescence, but during adulthood, too. It’s a good skill to carry throughout you lifetime.

After developing good communication with parents, it will also become easier for you to develop good communication within your interpersonal relationships.
