Chicago blogger Matt Maldre posted a link to attention-getting prevention literature about impaired driving. The unique aspect to these publications is that they are nearly 80 years old. As Maldre points out “I often think of the battle against drunk driving to be an effort in the past 20 years,” a sentiment that many people may share, but these articles and illustrations bring home the fact that alcohol consumption and driving have been an issue since the early days of motor vehicles.
The National Archives at Chicago scanned and posted several scans on their Facebook page of the Automobile Safety League of America’s first safety publication, Safety Tips. Founded by C. J. Strickland in the 1930s, the League was a “non-profit organization to promote safer driving.”
In response to the the disturbing increases of fatal car accidents (there was a 16% increase in deaths from 1933 to 1934), the League’s advocacy efforts included
- Educating car owners to drive carefully and safely
- Encouraging owners to keep their autos in safe working order
- Advocating standardization of street/highway markings, signal systems, and traffic rules
- Collaborating with safety officials
This publication stresses the important fact that prevention efforts have been — and always will be — needed in the fight against impaired driving.
