Raising their voices for change

SADD Conference, July 2009

Eight Ventura County teens were among the youth rallying on Capitol Hill on July 15, 2009 to bring awareness around the issues of underage drinking, in support of the 21 drinking age, and other youth health and safety issues.

Shawn Alavi-Moghaddan and Mayur Prajapati from Ventura County’s Newbury Park High School were at the SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) National Conference in Washington DC.  Their trip was sponsored by DCH Auto Group. Also in attendance were students from Royal and Rio Mesa High Schools.

The rally at the Capitol Building in Upper Senate Park brought together more than 500 SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) students and adult advisors attending the 2009 SADD National Conference.

SADD’s 2009 legislative priorities focus on three overarching issues of critical importance to the SADD movement: teen traffic safety, underage drinking and other drug use, and teen violence, suicide, and mental health.

I can’t say enough how knowing that the young people of our county and our country are getting involved in making a difference in their lives and their futures. We adults need to shout out and give our support in any way that we can. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow, I know that’s a coined expression but it so true and so exciting to know that they are taking an active part right now!
